Woe To You Hypocrites

From today’s reading…

Jesus said:

‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.

You pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin,

and have neglected the weightier things of the law:

judgment and mercy and fidelity.’” Matthew 23:23

Five days ago the lesbian mayor of Chicago was quoted in the Chicago Sun-Times,

“Given the threats that I have personally received. Given the threats to my home and my family, I’m gonna do everything to make sure that they are protected. I make no apologies whatsoever for that….We have a right in our home to live in peace.”

Two days later, 59 of her constituents were shot, 5 fatally, yet she continues to take away the rights of Chicagoans to protect themselves and their families and to live in peace.

But Wes, Jesus was talking about religious leaders, not civil leaders.”

Maybe. Maybe He was talking about all leaders. But in today’s post-modern/agnostic/secular/atheistic/progressive/anything-goes society, the government is the church for many.

Besides, when is any hypocrisy acceptable or desirable?

When anyone—priests, pastors, teachers, Boy Scout leaders, CEOs, mayors, etc.—abuse their positions of power and allow and/or intentionally cause harm to those who relied upon them to keep them safe, they deserve a seat right next to the furnace in hell.

Clean your insides—your heart and your mind—before you start barking orders at anyone or taking the seat of prominence at the banquet table because that’s the only way to…

Stay the course. Keep the faith. Endure.

Now go sell something.
