What Is Personal Selling?

The fact that the phrase “what is personal selling” is trending upwards in an SEO analysis is concerning.

All selling is personal. Ever watched Jimmy Kimmel’s “Celebrities Read Mean Tweets” segments? People lose their minds over actors and singers and it’s PERSONAL! 

A couple of years ago I discussed the fact that every sale in any business is personal with a little imagery from “The Godfather.” 

I also had this to say about what we should do with knee-jerk social media commentors.

But hey, we’re emotional, irrational creatures.

We make our buying decisions emotionally and justify them logically. 

In “Descartes’ Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain,” USC professor and neurologist, António Damásio, stresses “the crucial role of feeling in navigating the endless stream of life’s personal decisions.”

“But Wes, there’s the key phrase, ‘personal decisions.’ You see, I sell big widgets to Big Wigs at Big Companies. There are no personal decisions involved, which means I don’t need to worry about what is personal selling. I’m business selling.”

Oh really?

You don’t think Trump and Hillary are getting personal as they try to sell themselves to the American public?

You don’t think Steve Jobs was involved in personal selling when he said he’d “go thermonuclear war” on Google for their theft of the iPhone design?

Aaron Levie, founder of Box, “stared down the naysayers to prove them wrong.”

This past weekend I spoke to a group of aspiring speakers in Scottsdale. I spent 70 out of 90 minutes telling stories and getting personal, which is why I received video testimonials like this:
