The Stone Smashed The Statue

From today’s reading…

Daniel said to Nebuchadnezzar:

‘In your vision, O king, you saw a statue,

very large and exceedingly bright,

terrifying in appearance as it stood before you.

…But the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain

and filled the whole earth.’”

Today we move from the opening of Daniel to the second chapter where we find Daniel interpreting the dream of the king.

While the king will not have any problems during his reign, the same cannot be said for his heirs…nor his soul.

600 years later, Jesus tells a similar story in Luke 21:

While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, Jesus said, ‘All that you see here—the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.'”

In other words, what good is worldly success and comfort if what you create is not everlasting, especially the state of your soul?

The Alleluia today from Rev 2:10c reminds us

Remain faithful until death,

and I will give you the crown of life.”

Be smarter and more faithful than Nebuchadnezzar. Be wise like Daniel. Trust that what Jesus told His followers. Take comfort in John’s words from Revelation that the ultimate crown awaits you if you’ll only…

Stay the course. Keep the faith. Endure.
