The Law Ain’t Gonna Pull Yo Bacon Out Da Fire!

Would you say, then, that he who so lavishly sends the Spirit to you, and causes the miracles among you, is doing this through your practice of the Law or because you believed the message you heard?”
The Jewish tradition holds that there are 613 commandments or mitzvot in the Torah, which addressed everything from the need for circumcision to the cleaning of eating utensils. These 613 mitzvot comprise the Law to which Paul is referring today.
The Galatian converts of Paul had converted from paganism as alluded to in Galatians 4:8-9. But then some other missionaries were coming in behind Paul and teaching that the Galatians had to add these 613 commandments to their worship of Jesus in order to be saved. This is why Paul is so harsh in calling them “You stupid people in Galatia!” (Galatians 3:1) and again in verse 3, “can you be so stupid…?”
