The Keys to Open and Shut

From today’s reading…

I will place the key of the House of David on Eliakim’s shoulder;

when he opens, no one shall shut

when he shuts, no one shall open.” Isaiah 22:22

Shebna done did mess up once and for all. He was the master of the palace but the Lord “thrust” and pulled him down him from his lofty position. God hands Eliakim the sash and authority of Shebna and made Eilakim “the father (of) the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of David.”

In today’s reading from Matthew we see a similar handing over of the keys and with them, authority, from Jesus to Peter. With those keys, Peter can bind and loose on earth and in heaven.

That’s a lot of power that Jesus gives to Peter. Jesus does not make Peter God, but He does make Peter responsible for the care and feeding of His flock with the understanding that he can be thrust from the office and pulled down like any of us if he does not lead by example and show us how to…
