The Grass Withers, The Flower Wilts
From today’s reading…
A voice says, ‘Cry out!’
I answer, ‘What shall I cry out?’
‘All flesh is grass,
and all their glory like the flower of the field.
The grass withers, the flower wilts,
when the breath of the LORD blows upon it.
So then, the people is the grass.
Though the grass withers and the flower wilts,
the word of our God stands forever.’”
We’re two weeks from Christmas and have to read Isaiah who reminds us how weak, fragile, and fleeting is our earthly lives. Really, Isaiah?
Can’t this wait 16 days…or maybe after the New Year…or after President’s Day…or the Super Bowl…or Valentine’s Day…or St. Patrick’s Day…or after we get our taxes done in April…or maybe after Memorial Day and we’re all relaxed and ready for summer and the beach…but who wants to hear that at the beach?…so, on second thought…I guess there’s never a great time to hear this message…
Or maybe it’s always a perfect time to hear this message and keep it top of mind, front and center, first and foremost.
God did not come to us humbled, helpless, and weak, lying in a cold manger, only to be humiliated, rejected, and killed by His own people because we are strong.
He made himself small and weak because we are small and weak. He wanted to lead by example. He came to show us the way so we have the courage and the faith to…
Stay the course. Keep the faith. Endure.
