The 30-Year-Old Kings

From today’s reading…

David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty years:…” 2 Sam 5:4

Saul, the first king of the Israelites, is dead and “All the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron” to remind David of his calling and the promise of the Lord that he would lead them.

David accepts his calling and immediately…

the king and his men set out for Jerusalem

against the Jebusites who inhabited the region.

…But David did take the stronghold of Zion, which is the City of David.”

David did not seek the limelight but he was vigilant and diligent in how he lived his life so he would be ready to step up and answer God’s call when it came.

His first call came in the form of slaying Goliath.

Then he was called to lead all of Israel as a young man, which required leading many into battle. So as he grew what was expected of him also grew. (“For God, all things are possible.” Matt 19:26)

About 600 years later another 30-year old man from humble beginnings from the House of David would answer the call in to lead the Israelites and save them from oppressors in Jerusalem.

Be like David. Be like Jesus.

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. It’s the only way to…

Stay the course. Keep the faith. Endure.
