Slain…Blinded…Bound

From today’s reading…

He had Zedekiah’s sons slain before his eyes.

Then he blinded Zedekiah, bound him with fetters,

and had him brought to Babylon.” 2 Kings 25:7

Zedekiah was Jehoiachin’s uncle so ol’ Zed knew what happened to Jethro for doing “what was evil in the sight of the Lord,” but Zed was stubborn…or didn’t pay attention the first time around…or thought he was…different…or better…or the power got to his head.

Either way, he learned his lesson in no uncertain terms, and his sons paid for their father’s failings.

“But, Wes, that was a long time ago and Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, was a bad man. Things are…different now. People are…different now. Power doesn’t go to people’s head now like it did back then.”

Lookie here, ol Neb wasn’t the first bad man the world had ever seen and he certainly wasn’t the last. In fact, on February 25th of this year in Pakistan, a Christian man, Saleem Masih, 22, was tortured and left for dead by a Muslim landowner for simply washing off in the landowner’s well.

Saleem’s family was not informed of his whereabouts until the next day. They got him to the hospital but died of his wounds on the 28th.

And don’t even get me started on boys and young men here in America hitting elderly women in the head with skateboards or shooting fireworks into cars as people try to leave then dumping trashcans on their heads as they try to flee.

There is evil in the world because the devil is real and we are weak when we try to do things on our own, which is why, if we want to leave the world better than we found it and fight the good fight against the devil, we must…

Stay the course. Keep the faith. Endure.

Now go sell something.
