Rejoice When You Earn The Cistern

From today’s reading…

In those days, the princes said to the king:

‘Jeremiah ought to be put to death;

he is demoralizing the soldiers who are left in this city,

and all the people, by speaking such things to them;

he is not interested in the welfare of our people,

but in their ruin.’”

What was Jeremiah saying that was so “demoralizing?” What “such things” did he say to them? He told them that worshipping idols and turning away from God would lead to their destruction.

King Zedekiah was a wimp and his lack of leadership—in both matters of faith and government—contributed to the fall of Jerusalem, just as Jeremiah predicted.

What was Jeremiah’s reward for speaking the truth? He was arrested, beaten, thrown into a dungeon, forced into house arrest, and also thrown into a cistern to die.

How did Jeremiah respond to such harsh treatment? He kept on speaking the Truth. Being less like Zedekiah and more like Jeremiah is the only way to…
