Open Your Eyes and Recognize Him

From today’s reading…

And it happened that, while he was with them at table,

he took bread, said the blessing,

broke it, and gave it to them.

With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,…”

Luke 24:30-31

When do you know a dating relationship is getting serious? When he/she is invited over for dinner.

We need food to live, literally.

So sharing a meal is an intimate event.

In the Jewish faith going back thousands of years and continuing on today, animals were sacrificed to atone for our sins. The animals were then cooked and eaten.

But those sin offerings were incomplete, which is why the Son of Man had to come to us and make the perfect sacrifice of Himself, once and for all.

Jesus was a faithful Jew so He understood what it meant to eat the sacrificial lamb.

The two disciples on the road to Emmaus were faithful Jews, so they knew what it meant to eat the sacrificial lamb.

And in the breaking and blessing of the bread today they finally understood.

So come to the table, the altar.

Receive not a representation of Jesus, but “this is my body” (Luke 22:19), which was given for you.

Because living a life worthy of His sacrifice is the only way to…

Stay the course. Keep the faith. Endure.

Now go sell something.
