In Life and Death, Be An Example For All
From today’s reading…
Should I thus pretend for the sake of a brief moment of life,
they would be led astray by me,
while I would bring shame and dishonor on my old age.”
Eleazar was 90 years old and chose “a glorious death to a life of defilement.” Fortunately you and I don’t have people dragging us into the streets and forcing us to do something against our beliefs or die, so how does this apply to us?
Ironically we find ourselves in trying times because of the lack of trying times.
We get soft when there are no obvious wolves at our door, so we must become our own wolves.
We must die gloriously to gluttony, lust, greed, pride, despair, wrath, vainglory, and sloth.
When you are fighting for your life—as I do regularly in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—you only think about living and dying.
When you live in comfort, it’s easy to only think about yourself.
“In the absence of clearly-defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it.”
~Robert Heinlein
As the year comes to an end, set bigger goals.
Allow your weaknesses and shortcomings to die a glorious death.
Bring your life of defilement to a glorious end.
Enter your old age with honor knowing that you were able to…
Stay the course. Keep the faith. Endure.
