Deny. Pick up. Cross. Daily. Follow. Live.
From today’s reading…
Then he said to all,
‘If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself
and take up his cross daily and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
What profit is there for one to gain the whole world
yet lose or forfeit himself?’” Luke 9:23-25
Deny. Pick up. Cross. Daily. Follow.
I forget which millionaire/billionaire said it, but the gist was “The struggle is giving my kids the same struggles and challenges I had to overcome.”
Muscles, stamina, and intestinal fortitude are strengthened through use.
Warren Buffet said, “I want to leave my kids enough money to do anything, but not enough to do nothing.”
Over-indulgence in anything—even water, vitamins, and fruit—can and will kill you.
Everything in moderation is how we not only are to live, but it’s the only way we can thrive.
That means denying yourself that extra piece of bacon, donut, beer, or extra Netflix episode so you can get some quality rest, wake up early, and take on the day as the best version of yourself.
Many days, taking on that day means taking up a mighty cross such as a family illness or death, a divorce, a lawsuit, or a failed business venture.
And it will be daily. To master anything significant—why master something that is insignificant?—takes constant, consistent effort.
You can’t learn a new language, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or your faith by half-heartedly practicing it an hour a week.
“But Wes, I don’t have time.”
HORSE-PUCKY!
You have bad habits that you have accepted as normal and inevitable that eat into your time, your life, and your soul.
Detach. Observe. Recognize. Change. Deny. Lift. Carry. Grow. Live.
This is the only way to…
Stay the course. Keep the faith. Endure.
Now go sell something.
