Be Humble Hagar

From today’s reading…

When she became aware of her pregnancy,

she looked on her mistress with disdain.”

Hagar, the Egyptian maidservant to Sarai (Sarah), was given by Sarai to her husband Abram (Abraham), to have a child since Sarai was thought to be infertile. (She was in her 70’s at least when she gave Hagar to her husband.)

Hagar was of the mindset, “If you got it, flaunt it!”, which, unsurprisingly, didn’t sit well with Sarai, who abused Hagar so badly she ran off. (Women in the Old Testament were believed to be sinners if they were unable to bear children, so Hagar was adding insult to injury. Not good.)

As you might imagine, running off into the desert alone and pregnant is a lot to handle, and it almost killed Hagar and her son, Ishmael.

But the Lord intervened, as He always does, and to her credit, Hagar listened and obeyed, which saved her life and the life of her unborn son.

Be like humble Hagar and…

Stay the course. Keep the faith. Endure.
