Be Brave You Worm!

From today’s reading…

Do not be afraid, Jacob, you worm! You little handful of Israel! I shall help you, declares Yahweh; your redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.” Isaiah 41:14

Such endearing terms, huh: “worm,” “little handful” (or “maggot” in some translations).

Isaiah is quoting God. Maybe God is calling Israel these terrible names. Maybe He is simply repeating their own negative thoughts and phrases and feeding them back to the Israelites to prove how powerful He is.

Today’s reading from Isaiah begins with God taking Israel by the hand and encouraging them and then He goes on to tell them how bright their future is.

Psychologists now know through various studies that we are hard on ourselves and tend to focus on the negatives in life. In fact, from an evolutionary standpoint, it makes sense because it’s the things that break or don’t function properly that can kill us.

However, allowing that trait or tendency to creep into every aspect of your life is no way to live. In fact, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, so it would serve you well to remember what God tells us in Isaiah 41:13 today, “Do not be afraid, I shall help you.”

If God helps the worms and the maggots, He’ll help you and me, so…

Stay the course. Keep the faith. Endure.

Now go sell something.
